We all need stories
Stories shape the way we understand the world, and how we inform, persuade and inspire others.
Whatever business you’re in, you know that already.
But telling stories with an agenda – to win more customers, or manipulate colleagues – often backfires, because audiences aren’t just numbers but individual human beings.
They can sense when they’re being manipulated, and they’ll run a mile.
Hundreds of years ago, in the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about a group of people who went on a journey, telling stories – as a (mostly) good-natured competition.
We’ve revived Chaucer’s Game, and we use it to teach better storytelling.
We do it on the move – not travelling to Canterbury, but walking at a gentle pace around Hampstead Heath, for 3.5 hours, and finishing in Hampstead village.
To be clear: this particular “storytelling pilgrimage” is run for people in business, but we do it because it’s enjoyable. It’s fun, to tell stories and engage with an audience – to see what lands, and avoid what doesn’t.
And by making it mildly competitive, as Chaucer did, we get you fired up!

Who’s behind this?
This storytelling pilgrimage will be run by John-Paul Flintoff, author of five books in 16 languages, theatrical improviser and journalist for 15 years with the Financial Times and The Sunday Times (of London).

Leaving aside the value of better storytelling, it’s good for your stress levels to go for a walk in the fresh air, in a part of London that feels like countryside and enjoys amazing views.
